Mia stared at the half filled page of lined paper. The words blurred in and out of focus, as did her attention span. She wanted to do her homework. She really did. Her teachers were really laying on the work as they got ready for the last bit of the semester. She had a paper due in history, four problems for calculus, and some reading for English. All due by Friday. She knew, she really did know, that if she got it done now, she wouldn’t have to worry about it at home.

In an ideal world, she would do all of this at Steven’s house, but he was behind in some of his classes and needed help. It was easier for her to do her homework before they met up.

She closed her eyes, wanting to stop the growing headache. The noises of the library, however quiet, slipped in and out of her ears, rattling her brain. She placed her face in her hands, breathing in and out. It was always quieter in Mr. Becker’s office, where she usually spent this period. Instead of a dozen whispering teenagers, a heater that seemed to enjoy rattling at the worst times, and the thumping of books at the front desk, all Mia had to deal with was his quick fingers tapping at his keyboard.

Her eyes landed on the paper again. The words blurred and she groaned, throwing her pen on the table and leaning back in the uncomfortable wooden chair. Her eyes scanned the room. From her position in the back corner, she had a view of the entire library. The computers on the far side. The librarian’s desk in the middle. The reference books clumped together, looking unloved as always. And then the fiction books. Standing tall. Heavy. In front of a large window.

That was it. The bookcase Derek had pushed over.

Mia tried to imagine Derek actually pushing over a bookcase. She didn’t want to believe it. Even now, she wasn’t convinced that’s what had happened. Derek. Her pacifist, vegetarian, couldn’t-lift-a-twenty-pound-weight brother. But he had. People had seen it.

Unless all of them had seen the wrong thing.

She tore her eyes away from the bookcase. Derek was the last person she wanted to think about. She was so tired of dealing with him and his inability to get his life together. Her own situation was a mess, and it was time for him to grow up and start taking care of himself.

As she scanned the library again, attempting to build up the energy to work on her essay, her eyes landed on someone she wasn’t expecting to see: Cody.

He glanced around the room until she came into his sight. They locked eyes, and she tensed. He must have too.

They hadn’t spoken in a while. Not since he’d insulted her in that awful lie. Mia had wanted to talk to him about it when they were alone, but time had passed, and Steven had become more important in her life. Besides, whenever it seemed they would have a moment, Blair or Derek would show up.
